KENDRA

“How are you handling having a roommate?” Flynn asks me.

I swallow down a mouthful of coffee ice cream and shrug. “It’s whatever.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“It’s been fine. He cooks me dinner every night. That alone makes it worth having him around. I haven’t spent money on food in two weeks.”

“I’m sorry I forgot to ask you if you minded before I handed over my key to him. My friend was in need and I had to help him out,” he explains.

“Sure. I know where I rank with you. I’m a solid third now—Nadia, Darren, and then me.” I pretend to pout.

He looks concerned. “Don’t be like that, Kendra. You know I love you.”

I giggle, letting him off the hook. “I’m kidding with you. I know I’m third, but I’m good with that. Nadia is the best sister-in-law I could ask for, and you guys will be the best parents. I can’t wait to hold my niece or nephew.”

“I can wait.”

“Flynn. That’s horrible.”

“I’m nervous, okay?” he confesses.

“Why?”

“Because I’m barely an adult myself. How am I going to be responsible for a helpless infant?” I’ve never seen my brother look so distraught and I instantly want to reassure him.

“Flynn, you’ve taken care of me my whole life in one way or another. Even when I don’t want you to, you're always there for me. What makes you think it’ll be any different with your child?”

He pushes the empty plastic bowl away from him and rests his arms on the table, leaning forward. His eyes sweep around the ice cream shop, making sure the handful of other people in here aren’t paying attention to us. “What if I screw up somehow and hurt the baby? They’re so tiny and fragile. They can’t do anything for themselves,” he speaks softly.

I shake my head vehemently. “You won’t.”

“How do you know? I’m big and brutish. I play football for God’s sake.”

“You’re being ridiculous. You’re like a gentle giant.”

“Yeah, but I’ve never had anyone be one hundred percent dependent on me before.” I wish I could assuage all his concerns with the snap of my fingers.

“Have you told Nadia how worried you are?”

“No, she’s got enough to deal with carrying the baby. She’s tired and I don’t want to add anything to her plate.”

“You should tell her what you told me. It won’t make her worried at all. The fact that you’re concerned about being a good dad is just proof you’re going to be awesome at it. I bet she’ll be happy to learn that you care so much.”

“Of course I care. This baby is part of Nadia and me. He or she is the most important thing in our lives.” His immense love for the baby is obvious, and I find myself getting choked up. “Are you crying?” he asks.

“Not crying exactly. But you got me teary eyed. I’m so proud of you, Flynn. You’ve grown up so much this past year. You’re the best husband Nadia could ask for and you’ll be a fantastic father too.
