KENDRA
âHow are you handling having a roommate?â Flynn asks me.
I swallow down a mouthful of coffee ice cream and shrug. âItâs whatever.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âItâs been fine. He cooks me dinner every night. That alone makes it worth having him around. I havenât spent money on food in two weeks.â
âIâm sorry I forgot to ask you if you minded before I handed over my key to him. My friend was in need and I had to help him out,â he explains.
âSure. I know where I rank with you. Iâm a solid third nowâNadia, Darren, and then me.â I pretend to pout.
He looks concerned. âDonât be like that, Kendra. You know I love you.â
I giggle, letting him off the hook. âIâm kidding with you. I know Iâm third, but Iâm good with that. Nadia is the best sister-in-law I could ask for, and you guys will be the best parents. I canât wait to hold my niece or nephew.â
âI can wait.â
âFlynn. Thatâs horrible.â
âIâm nervous, okay?â he confesses.
âWhy?â
âBecause Iâm barely an adult myself. How am I going to be responsible for a helpless infant?â Iâve never seen my brother look so distraught and I instantly want to reassure him.
âFlynn, youâve taken care of me my whole life in one way or another. Even when I donât want you to, you're always there for me. What makes you think itâll be any different with your child?â
He pushes the empty plastic bowl away from him and rests his arms on the table, leaning forward. His eyes sweep around the ice cream shop, making sure the handful of other people in here arenât paying attention to us. âWhat if I screw up somehow and hurt the baby? Theyâre so tiny and fragile. They canât do anything for themselves,â he speaks softly.
I shake my head vehemently. âYou wonât.â
âHow do you know? Iâm big and brutish. I play football for Godâs sake.â
âYouâre being ridiculous. Youâre like a gentle giant.â
âYeah, but Iâve never had anyone be one hundred percent dependent on me before.â I wish I could assuage all his concerns with the snap of my fingers.
âHave you told Nadia how worried you are?â
âNo, sheâs got enough to deal with carrying the baby. Sheâs tired and I donât want to add anything to her plate.â
âYou should tell her what you told me. It wonât make her worried at all. The fact that youâre concerned about being a good dad is just proof youâre going to be awesome at it. I bet sheâll be happy to learn that you care so much.â
âOf course I care. This baby is part of Nadia and me. He or she is the most important thing in our lives.â His immense love for the baby is obvious, and I find myself getting choked up. âAre you crying?â he asks.
âNot crying exactly. But you got me teary eyed. Iâm so proud of you, Flynn. Youâve grown up so much this past year. Youâre the best husband Nadia could ask for and youâll be a fantastic father too.
